Quality enhancement – Retention of diversity– Styles accentuating the origin

PAR® Wine Award Greece 2017 presents the results

Frasdorf, the 3rd of March 2017 – Staying under the positive impression of the tasting session and keeping several new flavour profiles in their head, Martin Darting and his PAR dégustation team have concluded the 7th PAR Wine Award Greece on the 24th of February 2017. In total, 68 wines lined up at the start this year, six of them received the highest level of recognition – the Top Gold (96 PAR points each). While both top rankings of the previous year went to Crete, a few more regions of this tradition-steeped wine-growing country made the jump to the elite position in 2017. For instance, Domain Evharis from Attica (central Greece) with its 2009 Merlot Evharis Dry Red took the leading position in the red wine category. The white wine category delighted us with triple Top Gold distinctions: Domaine Florian from Thessaloniki/Macedonia for its 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, Minos Cretan Wines (Crete) for 2016 Vidiano and one more time the Domaine Evharis for the 2015 Assyrtiko Sur Lie. The Aegean Islands are at the forefront of dessert wine classification represented by the top-awarded Lipsi Winery with its 2013 Aposperitis and Domaine Sigalas with its 2006 Vinsanto.

Besides the already mentioned Top Gold candidates, further 25 wines became Gold medalists, and 26 more are the Silver medal winners, making the 2017 contest a unique event where almost all entered wines received commendation for their quality merits illustrating the remarkably high level of the competition, unprecedented in the history of the PAR Wine Award Greece. If the modern style characterised the majority of 2016 submitted wines, very clear, fruity and mineral, this year showed the up-and-coming trend for traditionally made and intentionally origin accentuating stylistics represented by round about 25 percent of participants.

Head of tasting Martin Darting says: „At the end of the day we gained an impression that Greek oenology is in the process of following the old paths in a new way, reinventing the authenticity. And on that score, products available to us during degustation possessed a highly skilled level performance bestowing an impressive, checkered and sometimes surprising experience. All in all, we’d say, that the wine quality is steadily increasing and Greek winegrowers know exactly how to handle the diversity of indigenous varieties. Whoever is looking for something exceptional, for sure it is exactly the right place to be.”

The range of in 2017 presented products shows the broad spectrum of the exceedingly varied Greek wine landscape. Nearly all wine regions of the country were represented during the recent event: from Crete und Peloponnese via the central Greece and Thessalia through to Epiros, Macedonia and the Aegean Islands covering, alongside the famous international type of grapes, the indigenous ones throughout all categories. Just to mention the red varieties like Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko and the whites like the famous Assyrtiko, the Vidiano, Malagousia, Kidonitsa or Moschofilero: all of them were among Gold and Top Gold winners.

PAR® System: Like all other WINE System AG awards, the PAR® Wine Award Greece tasting proceeds in accordance with sensory assessment system PAR® which stands for Product-Analysis-Ranking. Besides the attracting attention brought by this top award, many producers appreciate the revealing analyses underlying the PAR assessment. They show which criteria exactly have led to individual results and can be used as valuable documentation for the quality management. This system ensures an objective assessment with 100-point-pattern; specifically qualified independent tasters always work in a team of three persons. In order to meet the demands of the millennium old wine-growing tradition, particular attention is paid to the autochthonous grape varieties. Likewise, the traditional types, the international styles, in the context of modern oenology, receive the same neutral appraisal and recognition. Read more under www.par-system.de

PAR® Award is more than just a competition: along with attention entailed by this prestigious event, many producers value revealing analyses underlying the PAR® assessment practice. An independent jury consisting of oenologists, certified sommeliers and wine experts with its Head Martin Darting is responsible for the wine tasting. The impartial 100-point pattern gives the personal preferences of the taster no chance to influence the ultimate result.
